In our current issue we feature a story from Jen Michalski, Big Boy. Quaint as it may sound it’s a story about people, people trying to adjust to the events in their lives, people trying to forge bonds with the people they encounter as they move through life. In a previous interview Jen notes how interested she is in how people find ways to meld themselves to other people…and this story fits in well with that concern. I took some of Jen’s time and we talked about her work in publishing (in particular her efforts with her online journal, jmww, and her literary projects in Baltimore), her process as a writer, and her thoughts on contemporary writers and their work.
I asked Jen about her preferred starting point when writing, and her answer, “Sometimes I know where people are but not how they got there, and sometimes I know where people are but not where they are going. It’s all relative, though–you can take any person and move forward or backward, but the trick is finding where the movement is, the earthquake,” is just part of a great interview, available now.
