J.R. Solonche
She stands behind her mistress,
her arms folded, at rest
from a hundred chores.
She does not look over the other’s shoulder.
Instead she looks at the window
and sees in its stream of white-gold
some delight outside this house,
whose hands are calloused,
whose hair is fire,
not a gentleman, but a lover
who has no need of letters.
